A successful event
Join Hands for Japan - marked the first anniversary of the devasting tsunami that hit North East Japan.
Despite the drizzling rain in the morning, the rain held off and we had a good crowd of about 600 people make their way down to the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway to Join Hands for Japan. The event started with a powerful performance of the Wai Taiko Drummer group all the way from Hamilton then followed by a heart felt speech from New Plymouth Mayor Hon. Harry Duynhoven & Reiko Smithers translated speech of Mishima City's Mayor. Then the crowds of people made their way across to the walkway with the help of our 40+ volunteers to form a human chain. '
There were many with young children and others even with their dogs and many of which could not contain their emotions. It was a very humbling experience for all of us involved.
Once we got the signal from the helicopter, (kindly donated by Heliview), we all raised our joined hands in unison at the helicopter. Rob Tucker, the renowned Taranaki photographer donated his time and expertise for this historic event.
The event concluded with the raffle prize draw with over ten wonderful prizes given out to the lucky winners. Thank you again to all the businesses who kindly donated their services and product for this event. We would like to thank all the volunteers who took part in helping this come together. We wouldn't of done it without ALL of you. Thank you so much. Arigatou!
